Trade Unions
Three reasons to join a union
1. Safer workplaces
Over the years, unions have fought to make workplaces safer. From protective clothing to limits on working hours, they’ve come together to ensure employers do the right thing.
During this pandemic, union representatives have been on the frontline making sure employers provided handwashing facilities and enough space to social distance.
Protection at work depends on your trade union and their expert health and safety reps.
2. More secure jobs that pay better
Trade unions fight for jobs during tough times. They also negotiate with employers to get a better deal for workers by improving pay and working conditions.
Union members are more likely to have more control over their working hours, and workplaces with unions have higher pay.
By fighting for workers’ protection, unions can help us rebuild after this crisis. They can make sure new jobs are good jobs and help restore people’s pride in where they live.
3. Better sick pay
Workers in unions are more likely to have better sick pay than workers who are not. Sick pay is vital to stopping workplace illnesses from spreading which keeps families safe.
During the Covid-19 crisis, those with proper sick pay has allowed workers to isolate safely and not end up out of pocket for doing the right thing. This helped protect our NHS and our key workers. But this fight isn’t over. Too many people are reliant on Statutory Sick Pay which even the government has admitted isn’t enough to live on. Trade unions are at the forefront of this fight.
Trade unions founded the Labour Party over 100 years ago because we achieve more together than we do alone.
Trade unions and the Labour movement, working together, will help make Britain the best place to grow up in and grow old in. Together we can secure the economy, protect the NHS and rebuild our country.
